Every Weekend beginning in May through the Autumn months - Nature Programs & Guided Hikes at DeSoto State Park - Frogs, creepy crawlers, mountain life, Trail of Tears, flower and bird watching, are just a sampling of what you will learn by state park naturalists and Jacksonville State University Field School staff. Printed brochures of all programs are available by calling 256-782-5697.  Programs are held every Friday and Saturday night at the DeSoto State Park Pavilion and begin at 8 p.m. In the event of rain, programs are moved to the Nature Center. 256-845-0051

November & December Christmas at Eddies This 23rd annual decorating of Eddie’s Garden Center in Henagar is a fun tradition. With over 75 Christmas trees, each with individual themes, it’s impossible to see everything in just one trip. Stroll through the Christmas Wonderland and see how each room has been tastefully decorated for the holidays. Ornaments ranging from western to whimsical, cartoons to retro, Victorian to collegiate – there’s truly something for everyone. An open house takes place during the first weekend in November. November 1 & 2  Battle of Missionary Ridge Taking place at Sequoyah Caverns & Ellis Homestead, this event begins on Friday with children’s educational activities to teach them about the history of the civil war and take them on a tour of Sutler’s Village. The Civil War re-enactments will take place on Saturday and Sunday. A Sutler’s Village, live re-enactments with artillery and Civil War cannons, Civil War-era food, and much more. 800-843-5098

November 1 Guided Archaeology Tour of Cherokee and DeKalb Counties  Come along with JSU archaeologist Dr. Harry Holstein for a guided tour of sites throughout Cherokee and DeKalb counties. Participants will visit the 19th century Cornwall Iron Furnace, a Spanish contact site at Coosa village, a rock shelter in use as early as 3000 B.C., and much more. Bring your own food and drinks. November 8  DeSoto State Park Campfire Talks: The Legend of Sequoyah  Sequoyah is celebrated as a Native American genius who, solely from the resources of his mind, endowed a whole tribe with learning; the only man in history to conceive and perfect in its entirety in alphabet. November 8 Medicinal Plants of Fall: Gathering & Preserving Herbs Join herbalist Darryl Patton and DSP staff for a hike on the trails of Desoto State Park to see the fruits of the Fall season. November 9 Landmarks Celebration of Armistice Day  Join us to pay tribute to our veterans at the Fort Payne Opera House.  Programs include color guard and pledge of allegiance by the Fort Payne High School Junior ROTC, Patriotic Songs by Fort Payne High and Northeast College Choruses, and the Whole Backstage Theatre presents the "Spirit of America".  All World War II Veterans are invited as special guests. November 14 Orbix Paperweight Making Class This class is designed for those who really just want see what molten glass is all about.  Feel the heat, gather from the furnace, sculpt the glass into you own design.  It is ultimately about the experience, some experimentation and a couple nice paperweights to take home or to the office to show your friends. January 24 Wilderness Survival 101 Let your instincts come alive and learn to survive.  Captain Jerry Mize (JSU Department of Military Science) and Larry Beane (National Park Service) will teach hands-on methods of basic survival skills dealing with water, shelter, food, fire and getting found. Skills are similar to those shown on popular TV. This program will be outside, hands-on, hiking, collecting materials with hands so wear appropriate clothing for a cold winter day in the wilderness. Participants will be sitting on the ground, crawling on the ground as necessary, and will get “dirty” so to speak. Dress in layers. Bring your own lunch, snacks and water/drink. Meet at the Little River Canyon Center. April 4 Deep Canyon Hike This is our most challenging and rewarding hike of the year! Join JSU's Dr. Kelly Gregg and Dr. Jonathon Herbert for an unforgettable view of one of Alabama’s natural wonders, Little River Canyon. May 2  Bilingual Spanish-English Hike (ˇpara los personas hablas Espanol! Join Dr. Kelly Gregg on a walking tour of DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon. Interpreted in Spanish by Mr. Matthew Grizzard and JSU International Students, this moderately strenuous hike will give an introduction to local geology, archaeology, history, and native plants. The program is designed for individuals who are fluent and learning Spanish. Wear appropriate shoes and bring a camera, snacks and water. A visit to the Mexican bakery and tortilla factory in Fort Payne is a delightful end to this program. $10 per adult and children free with parent. May 3 Wildflower Saturday at DeSoto State Park This nature-packed day begins with a hearty breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Mountain Inn Restaurant in DeSoto State Park. A guided wildflower hike begins at 8:30. Return to the restaurant for lunch at 11:30 followed by another hike at 12:30. A dinner buffet and wildflower presentation at the restaurant wind down the day. The hikes are free to the public. Menu prices will be charged for all meals. June 23 - 26 Canyon Camp for Children Hands-on environmental education, outdoor fun, arts and exploration of the natural world abound in this camp. Campers will experience hands-on nature study at the Little River Canyon Center and they will explore the Little River Canyon National Preserve, DeSoto State Park, and other areas in DeKalb County. These camps leave children begging for more JSU Field School fun! Every participant builds his or her own memory journal and receives a photo CD of camp week to share with their family and friends. September 19 9th Annual John Benge Commemorative Motorcycle Ride  We welcome you to join us as we ride in commemoration of DeKalb County's Cherokee Indian Heritage and all Indian Nations who were forced to walk on the Infamous Trail of Tears.  The DeKalb County Tourist Association in Fort Payne, will serve as the congregating location for bikers in their preparation to depart on the 7th Annual John Benge Commemorative Ride Saturday at 7 a.m. The ride is strictly voluntary and you Ride at Your Own Risk. November & December Christmas at Eddies This 23rd annual decorating of Eddie’s Garden Center in Henagar is a fun tradition. With over 75 Christmas trees, each with individual themes, it’s impossible to see everything in just one trip. Stroll through the Christmas Wonderland and see how each room has been tastefully decorated for the holidays. Ornaments ranging from western to whimsical, cartoons to retro, Victorian to collegiate – there’s truly something for everyone. An open house takes place during the first weekend in November.
