Every Weekend beginning in May through the Autumn months - Nature Programs & Guided Hikes at DeSoto State Park - Frogs, creepy crawlers, mountain life, Trail of Tears, flower and bird watching, are just a sampling of what you will learn by state park naturalists and Jacksonville State University Field School staff. Printed brochures of all programs are available by calling 256-782-5697.  Programs are held every Friday and Saturday night at the DeSoto State Park Pavilion and begin at 8 p.m. In the event of rain, programs are moved to the Nature Center. 256-845-0051

July 3 GPS Basic Training and Navigation Class Part 1 Learn how to use a map, compass, and a handheld GPS. Learn basic navigation and how to pinpoint a location for quick return, or quick rescue. July 4 26th Annual Sand Mountain Potato Festival Sand Mountain is well known for its rich diversity of agricultural products, including potatoes. July 7 - 10 Little River Canyon Adventure Camp Hands-on environmental education, arts, exploration of the natural world AND outdoor adventures abound in this camp. This camp travels to Little River Canyon, DeSoto State Park, Talladega National Forest, and/or Cheaha State Park. Children who participate in Renee Morrison’s camps beg for “just one more week” with JSU Field Schools. Every participant receives a photo CD of camp week to share with their family and friends. July 10 Mountain Bike Tour This tour explores some beautiful trails and paths atop Lookout Mountain or Sand Mountain. Come have an enjoyable ride without the fear of getting lost. July 10 Charity Softball Tournament  Come out and support the DeKalb County Children's Advocacy Center.  Watch as the Fort Payne Police Department and the Scottsboro Fireman battle it out at the Fort Payne Sports Complex. Game begins at 6 p.m. 256-997-9700

July 11 Rappelling Basics Class This class covers rappelling basics indoor and basics outdoor.  The basics indoor class teaches you about rappelling safety/rappelling gear and its application, rappelling knots and application, and rigging points needed for rappelling.  The basics outdoor class reviews safety procedures, knots, gear, and rigging points; then you learn how to safely rappel and do several rappels before returning to the store for the rappelling test and knot exam.  Total indoor and outdoor cost $145/person. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  256-997-9577  Note: You will receive a Class 1 rappelling card upon successful completion of this class and exams.

July 18 Native American Pottery Workshop Join expert potter, Tammy Beane, to learn how pottery was made on Lookout Mountain thousands of years ago. We’ll provide the clay as well as bone needles and paddles to make designs on your pots. A handout will be provided detailing the firing techniques discussed in the workshop. August 1  DeSoto State Park Campfire Talks: The Legend of Sequoyah  Sequoyah is celebrated as a Native American genius who, solely from the resources of his mind, endowed a whole tribe with learning; the only man in history to conceive and perfect in its entirety in alphabet. Sequoyah, is known to have taught in the DeKalb County area for years after his mother took up residence in Willstown, Alabama during the movement of the Cherokee. 8 p.m. 256-845-0051

August 23 DeSoto State Park Campfire Talks: Animal Camouflage Many animals at Little River mimic backgrounds or other more threatening critters to survive the challenges of their environment. September 17 3nd Annual Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament The Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fort Payne will host this Boom Days Event. September 19 9th Annual John Benge Commemorative Motorcycle Ride  We welcome you to join us as we ride in commemoration of DeKalb County's Cherokee Indian Heritage and all Indian Nations who were forced to walk on the Infamous Trail of Tears.  The DeKalb County Tourist Association in Fort Payne, will serve as the congregating location for bikers in their preparation to depart on the 7th Annual John Benge Commemorative Ride Saturday at 7 a.m. The ride is strictly voluntary and you Ride at Your Own Risk. September 25 DeSoto State Park Campfire Talks: Cherokee Trail of Tears Thousands of Native Americans were taken from their homelands and sent to new territory in Oklahoma during the Indian Removal Act of the 1830’s. October 2 DeSoto State Park Campfire Talks: Prehistoric Cultures of Little River From the ice age to DeSoto’s expedition, Little River Canyon and Lookout Mountain are rich in the heritage of native peoples. October 3 Native American Pottery Workshop Join expert potter, Tammy Beane, to learn how pottery was made on Lookout Mountain thousands of years ago. We’ll provide the clay as well as bone needles and paddles to make designs on your pots. A handout will be provided detailing the firing techniques discussed in the workshop. November 7 Guided Archaeology Tour of Cherokee and DeKalb Counties  Come along with JSU archaeologist Dr. Harry Holstein for a guided tour of sites throughout Cherokee and DeKalb counties. Participants will visit the 19th century Cornwall Iron Furnace, a Spanish contact site at Coosa village, a rock shelter in use as early as 3000 B.C., and much more. Bring your own food and drinks. November & December Christmas at Eddies This 23rd annual decorating of Eddie’s Garden Center in Henagar is a fun tradition. With over 75 Christmas trees, each with individual themes, it’s impossible to see everything in just one trip. Stroll through the Christmas Wonderland and see how each room has been tastefully decorated for the holidays. Ornaments ranging from western to whimsical, cartoons to retro, Victorian to collegiate – there’s truly something for everyone. An open house takes place during the first weekend in November. December 5 Winter Fairy Houses & Hobbit Hike (Children’s Nature Observation Skills) Pausing in the woods or along the river to create a small structure for the good folk gives children the opportunity to bond with nature on a very personal level. She’ll also lead a short “hobbity” hike through an enchanted forest to identify places where fairies might live or play to teach observation skills to budding young naturalists.  Award-winning storyteller and naturalist Renee Morrison was taught to make fairy houses by her grandmother and has been making fairy houses with her sons and nature campers for decades.
