The Year of Outdoor Alabama

Enjoy Outdoor Alabama in the mountains of NE Alabama. 2006 was the Year of Outdoor for the state of Alabama. We like to celebrate the great outdoors every day, every year! Take to the many miles of hiking and biking trails, explore underground in a cave, rappel sheer rock cliffs, kayak a raging river, and fly fish from several streams and lakes. Enjoy these various activities alone or as a group, or under the guidance of experienced outfitters. From moderate to strenuous, above ground and underground, over rocks and through deep canyons, you will find that we have it all. Plan to visit Lookout Mountain soon and take in all of these wonderful outdoor adventures. We can't wait to see you!

Buck's Pocket State Park - This 2,000 acre recreation park located along South Sauty Creek and Morgan's Cove provides a number of habitats worthy of exploration. View Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Bald Eagles, Red-eyed Vireo, the Belted Kingfisher, and many other bird species. Located on Sand Mountain at 393 County Road 174, Grove Oak,  35975. Designated as one of 50 sites on the North Alabama Birding Trail! 256-659-2000.

DeKalb County State Public Fishing Lake - This 120-acre state lake is a popular fishing spot that also serves as an excellent location to view some of North Alabama's bird life. Great Blue Heron, Kingfisher, Canadian Geese, Osprey and Bald Eagles are just some of the wildlife you might encounter. The lake is located on Sand Mountain at 720 County Rd. 194 in Sylvania. Designated as one of 50 sites on the North Alabama Birding Trail! 256-657-1300

DeSoto State Park - This 3,000 acre park offers a multitude of bird life among lush green forests, streams and waterfalls. A variety of woodpeckers put on a showy display making them easy to spot. Species include Pileated, Red-headed, Red-bellied, Downy and Hairy woodpeckers. Other bird species include the Scarlet Tanager, Wood Thrushes and Yellow-throated Vireos, among many others. 13903 County Road 89, Fort Payne, Alabama 35967. High Falls Park - This day-use park located along Town Creek is a perfect location for viewing migratory waterfowl, a variety of song birds, Woodpeckers and Bald Eagles as well as a majestic waterfall. Bring a canoe and picnic lunch. You will want to spend the day in this beautiful park nestled on Sand Mountain in Geraldine. 256-623-2281

Little River Canyon National Preserve - As you drive along a 23-mile scenic Canyon Rim Parkway, listen close for the Yellow-breasted Chats and Prairie Warblers. Red-tailed and Broad-winged hawks soar through the deep canyon to lofty heights. Peregrine Falcons and Golden Eagles are known to cruise the canyon and take a dip in the mighty river in search of fish. Developed overlooks along the canyons rim and challenging paths into the canyon add to your bird viewing pleasure. Designated as one of 50 sites on the North Alabama Birding Trail! 256-845-9605

Buck's Pocket State Park - 2,000 acre recreation park that has modern and primitive campsites, picnic areas, pavilions, comfort stations, hiking trails, boating and fishing areas and beautiful mountain scenery. Hike from the depths of this rugged canyon to Brow Point, a beautiful overlook above this masterpiece of nature. Located on Sand Mountain at 393 County Road 174, Grove Oak,  35975. 256-659-2000.

DeKalb County State Public Fishing Lake - Campsites are tucked in the woods along this 120-acre state lake that offers some of the finest fishing in NE Alabama. The lake is open 7 days a week from sun-up to sun-down and is located on Sand Mountain at 720 County Rd. 194 in Sylvania. 256-657-1300

DeSoto State Park - Take the opportunity to commune with nature here at DeSoto State Park. This 3,000 acre park currently has 58 new & improved campsites, 20 primitive sites and two group sites. Be sure to check with us to find out more about our weekend interpretive programs and guided hikes we have planned all throughout the summer and fall seasons. Sequoyah Campgrounds - This campground is located at the foothills of Sand Mountain at Sequoyah Caverns.  Besides the beautiful view of Wills Valley and Lookout Mountain, this park offers 30/50 amp hook-ups, a dumping station, picnic area, bathrooms and showers, store, washer and dryer and a swimming pool. 1438 County Road 731, Valley Head, AL. DeSoto State Park - The mighty Little River flows across Lookout Mountain into this 3,000 acre park. Launch a boat from the parking lot at DeSoto Falls and travel upstream for some great bass fishing or hike into the west fork of the Little River along any number of hiking trails and cast a line for some fly fishing. High Falls Park - A perfect secluded hideaway for fly fishing or paddling upstream for some bass fishing. Located on Sand Mountain off Highway 227 in Geraldine. 256-623-2281

Little River Canyon National Preserve - Hike into the deep canyon for breathtaking views and scenery and enjoy a day of hunting, fishing and trapping. You will want to pack a picnic lunch and plenty of water for this rugged adventure. Hunting is allowed only in designated areas of the preserve. 256-845-9605

Lookout Creek Farm - This Licensed Preserve is nestled amid a Treasure Forest at the foot of Lookout Mountain, on 250 acres, exclusive to our guests. Our property has views of 3 surrounding mountains. There are 5 fishing lakes and an abundance of wildlife that makes us a great location for hunting or observation. New to the farm is a handicap-accessible shooting house/observation tower. Please call at least 10 days in advance to schedule a hunting package and/or accommodations in our fully furnished cabin that sleeps  six. Buck's Pocket State Park - This 2,000 acre park offers miles of hiking trails from moderate to strenuous. Located on Sand Mountain at Route 1 Box 24, Grove Oak,  35975. 256-659-2000.

DeSoto State Park - Hike into a deep canyon or through the forests along some 12-miles of hiking trails. View waterfalls along the Lost Falls Trails, The Azalea Cascades Trail and the Indian Falls Trail. Ride your bike along miles of mountain trails including a trail that leads to an "unfinished rock bridge" that was being constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to the breakout of WWII. This meticulous stonework can be viewed throughout the state park and stands as a testament of the labor of the Men of the CCC. 800-568-8840

DeSoto-Mentone Ridge Run - Cycle this 32-mile route that features shady and curvy roads along the brow of Lookout Mountain. Take the 2-mile side trip to view the breathtaking DeSoto Falls. Little River Canyon National Preserve - Hike into the deep canyon along Eberhart Trail for breathtaking views or bring your horses to enjoy miles of trails in the Wildlife Management Area. Bike, or motorcycle,  along the 23-mile scenic canyon rim drive for a roller-coaster ride of a lifetime. This National Preserve offers the outdoor enthusiasts every thrill imaginable. Kayak the raging Little River on Class 7 Rapids from  a 35-foot waterfall, or rappel sheer rock cliffs near the 133-foot Grace's High Falls on the canyon. 256-845-9605

Shady Grove Dude Ranch - Guided mountain (hourly) trail rides, hourly rates or combination packages with a meal cooked at the Roundup are offered at Alabama's only Dude Ranch.
